The Website does not exists or is not configured for Project Server

Today I came across a very annoying problem in Project Server 2010.
I have had many problems creating workspaces because the workspace template was corrupt and I could not create a new template before I had a site to create it from.

Therefore, instead of creating it through the project creation process I decided to create one through SharePoint->Sites and Workspaces.

After the site was created, I copied the URL and I tried to connect it to a project through Server Settings->Project Sites.

Edit Site Adress

Now I enter the URL I copied from the site just created and click Test URL. The page loads and everything seems fine. However, after clicking OK the following error comes up.

"The Web site does not exists or is not configured for Project Server. Enter a Web site that has been extended with a Project Server compatible template".

Now the first thing I start to investigate is what is wrong with the site. Am I missing a feature/webpart or…
After some retrying, I find that the site is actually fine. It is Project Server that doesn't understand the URL.
The URL must not contain any HTML escape characters or any leading or trailing slashes.
